He married a fellow servicewoman in 1950. McIntyre began his career as a freelance writer in 1953, when he published his first book, The Bigamist's Wife, a psychological mystery novel that became a bestseller. In addition to writing fiction, he has written dozens of non-fiction books on psychology and history.

In 1980 he co-founded the Green Books Foundation with his wife, Betty Jukes McIntyre, which publishes educational titles for children. McIntyre died on February 12, 1998.
